Self-drive tour of the West Coast Flower Route

West Coast Flowers in bloomDay 1 - Depart from your hotel in your 4x4 SUV and travel towards the West Coast. Enjoy a stop at Mamre to view the church, and in Darling to walk through the colour fields of flowers. Continue to Yzerfontein to smell the ocean, and on to the West Coast National Park to experience a wonder-filled flower display. Enjoy lunch on route at Saldanha Bay before travelling to St Helena Bay, via the Dinosaur Park to view 60000 years of local history, for dinner and overnight in St Helena Bay.

Day 2 - Travel via the coast to Lamberts Bay to visit Bird Island, a favourite haunt of penguins, cormorants, garnets and other bird species. Continue to Clanwilliam, where you will have the opportunity to visit the Ramskop Flower Reserve for a walk in the flowers and collects some seeds; visit the Rooibos Tea Board for some tea and the Straussberger Leather Shoe Factory to view local industry. After a light lunch enjoy your drive to the lovely Citrusdal, for overnight and dinner surrounded by mountains.

Day 3 - After breakfast, depart over the Cedarburg Mountains to visit Leipolt's Grave and the Biedouw Valley to see the most flower filled fields in the Cedarburg. In the afternoon continue to Graafwater, where you may visit the cave known as the Heerenlogement (''Gentlemen's Lodgings''). Here, on the walls, are scratched the names of more than one hundred and seventy 17th and 18th Century travellers who found overnight accommodation here, near a conveniently situated spring. End the day with a drive to Vredendal for overnight and dinner.

Day 4 - You have the opportunity to visit a Vredendal wine cellar for a wine tasting, and then onto the Succulent Nursery at Vanrynsdorp. Continue northward on the N7 through the fields of wild flowers - the heart of the Namaqualand. Stop en route at the Skilpad Nature Reserve and the Kamieskroon Mountains. Later afternoon drive to Springbok for overnight and dinner.  

Day 5 - Early morning departure from Springbok and travel south on the Kliprand road to the Aloe Forest. You could include a visit to the Waterfall and the Matjiesfontien Wild Flower Farm in Niewoudtville for the best flower bulb display you have ever seen. Continue to Calvinia for overnight and dinner.

Day 6 - Start your morning with a visit to the Calvinia Museum, then onto the Great Karoo with its unspoilt beauty and its flowers. On route you may stop at Sutherland and enjoy afternoon tea at Matjiesfontien. Finally you continue along the N1 highway to Cape Town for check inn at Cape Town International Airport or overnight accommodation at a hotel of your choice.
